Occupational Therapy students Penny Ralph and Ammelia Wells represented the University last week at the College of Occupational Therapy’s (COT) annual Conference in Brighton.
Both students secured places to attend the conference earlier this year after Ammelia submitted a proposal outlining reasons why her attendance would aid her studies and future career, and Penny submitted an abstract based on her work in palliative care.
In addition to attendance, Penny also secured a place to present a talk at the conference, entitled ‘A scrapbooking group for palliative clients in rural communities’. Penny comments, “Presenting at the conference was certainly an experience. It was quite scary but I am so glad I did it. I would encourage people who are interested to give it a go too”.
Held over a three day period from 3-5 June 2014, the conference provided a variety of presentations, seminars and workshops, proving to be incredibly insightful for both Penny and Ammelia.
"There were some interesting presentations, some of which were particular highlights of mine regarding the role of occupational therapy in sexuality, gender and trans-gender. There were also excellent interactive workshops, which gave me great ideas I can adapt and apply to my current placement in mental health”, says Penny.
Ammelia also commented on her highlights from the conference, "it was great to see a high number of Occupational Therapists all together at the conference and it was a pleasure meeting them and talking to them about their own experiences. I particularly enjoyed the paediatric papers and poster presentations, and also the social care and legislation sessions".
