Final year Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) students Penny Ralph, left, and Ammelia Wells, right, will represent the University and course at this year's College of Occupational Therapists Annual Conference.

Penny Ralph and Ammelia Wells, both third year students on the Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) course, are attending this year’s annual conference held by the College of Occupational Therapists (COT). The 38th annual conference and exhibition is the only UK peer reviewed conference for the profession and will be held in Brighton over a three day period from 3-5 June 2014.

Both Penny and Ammelia who will represent the University and course at the conference secured their places through submitting abstracts and applications to COT for review. Ammelia’s application outlined the reasons why it would be beneficial for her to attend. Commenting about her reasons, she says, “I want to build up connections at the conference and gain an insight into what the future holds for Occupational Therapy. I would also like to present my findings to other students in the future”.

Penny who secured her place after submitting an abstract based on her work in palliative care will also present at the conference, where she will deliver a talk entitled, ‘A scrapbooking group for palliative clients in rural communities’. Penny states, “The project proposed to reduce social isolation, enable engagement in and exploration of meaningful activity, and enhance quality of life and thus promote well-being and help clients remain at home.”

Both students have varying interests, having secured different placements throughout their time at the University. Penny’s interests lie within research and mental health, in which she comments, “I love research but you need to know how to present it. This is the perfect opportunity for me to practice my skills. I also undertook a placement within mental health, which is one of the areas the conference will cover, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s all going to tie together”.

Ammelia’s interests lie within paediatrics. She has completed two placements in this sector and is certain this is the career she wants to pursue upon graduation in November 2014.

The conference’s mix of special guest presentations, seminars and workshops will provide Penny and Ammelia with incredibly beneficial and insightful information into the profession.

Further information about the Conference is available on the College of Occupational Therapists website, where you can also access the full conference programme.
