Mark Hainsworth graduated from Psychology BSc(Hons) at the University in July 2012 and has since gained a Master’s degree in Organisational Psychology. He now hopes to work alongside people in the world of Human Resources.

Where it all began

Whilst studying his A Levels Mark discovered a keen interest in Psychology and decided to continue his studies on the subject at degree level. “I studied Psychology at A Level which I really enjoyed and did quite well, so decided that I wanted to pursue this interest further”, he says.

Mark then began his search for potential universities. “I looked at the universities on offer and was impressed by what the current students had to say about the University of Huddersfield. I also went on the website, which contained good testimonials, information about high student satisfaction and had impressive high employability stats for the graduates”.

Mark also attended a university open day where he was impressed by the psychology presentations, campus tours and the opportunity to ask questions and interact with lecturers.

Independence, confidence and character building

Reflecting back on those first few months when starting university, Mark says, “I didn’t have trouble making the transition from college to university. Although you’re obviously nervous, for me it was a great chance to meet new people and I was really open to that. It enabled me to change my character and gain more confidence”.

Although Mark didn’t stay in student accommodation, he still experienced ‘student life’: “In the first year I signed up for the American Football team which provided the opportunity to try something new that was great fun. Also through American football and my time at the University, I’ve gained some friends for life.”

In his third year, Mark also became a student representative where he supported and liaised with his fellow students and staff regarding issues and concerns they had.

Support, belief and having the tools to make it happen

Mark speaks very highly of his time at the University, commenting that “the lecturers are really supportive and encouraging and they give you the confidence to believe in yourself”.

Mark also commented on the facilities, saying “they’re great, especially the library, which can be accessed 24/7. I also used the Careers Service before I left the University, who helped me with my CV and offered advice and guidance on what to expect upon graduation”.

Looking to the future

Since graduating from Psychology BSc(Hons) with a First Class Honours degree in July 2012, Mark has recently completed a Master’ degree in Organisational Psychology and is now on the lookout for Human Resources graduate schemes. Mark explains, “My ambition is to work in Human Resources where I can use what I learnt at University to ensure the employees are focussed, happy and driven.”

Reflecting back on his study path, Mark says he would strongly recommend Psychology at the University of Huddersfield, “I’d tell anyone to just go for it! Psychology is such a varied subject. It’s opened so many doors for me because it doesn’t just offer one route”.
