This week is National Obesity Awareness Week, raising the profile of a condition which costs the NHS around £5bn each year.

Dr Deborah Pufal, a registered Nutritionist who is course leader for the Food and Nutrition courses at the University spoke to the Huddersfield Examiner about obesity issues.  In the article, she acknowledges that simple advice about eating less and being more active may not be appropriate for some people because it doesn’t acknowledge psychological factors which affect the amount of calories they consume.

Dr Pufal also warns against “yo-yo dieting” which can occur by losing weight too quickly.  She explained that losing more than 1kg per week can mean that you put more weight back on once the diet is over and you return to normal eating.

In the article, Dr Pufal blames busy modern lifestyles and the fact that many people grow up with no understanding of healty diets or how to cook for a reliance on takeaways and ready meals which means that obesity is becoming the norm.
