A unique national and international project which aims to improve the treatment of acne has launched a survey for those who have been affected by the condition.

The Acne Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) is overseen and monitored by the James Lind Alliance (JLA, www.lindalliance.org) under umbrella of the NHS and National Insititute for Health Research (NIHR). It brings together organisations, medical professionals and researchers from a range of backgrounds, including patients, to try to understand which aspects of acne treatment should be a priority for researchers and funding organisations to work on.

An initial survey in 2013 comprised of over 6,000 valid questions being sorted into themes and counted to identify those asked most frequently. The 30 most popular questions have been identified and these now form the second survey in which people with acne and healthcare professionals are asked to identify up to three priorities from the list.

Dr Mahendra Patel, (pictured) Principal Enterprise Fellow  at the Division of Pharmacy University of Huddersfield, is a member of the PSP’s Steering Group.  He said “Acne is a very common skin condition but it can be difficult for people to come forward and seek treatment. For many it can be a very embarrassing condition.  This is an opportunity for people with acne to tell us about how they want their condition to be better treated and managed in the future.”

People with acne and healthcare professionals involved in its treatment are invited to take the online survey.
