Rachel’s in the running, but she needs your votes!

Rachel Smith

UNDERGRADUATE Rachel Smith (pictured) doesn’t drive yet.  She’s saving that till she completes her degree course.  But she has definite views about cars.  They aren’t colourful enough!  So she has used her design skills to try and do something about it. And she could be in line for a prize worth thousands of pounds.

To help her scoop the money, she needs votes.  So she hopes that students and staff at the University of Huddersfield, if they like her colour scheme and pattern for a new electric car, will get on the web and boost her prospects.

Renault is launching its Twizy electric car in the UK and – aiming to increase its appeal to young drivers – it wanted to find a funky colour scheme for the tiny vehicle.

So it launched a competition, aimed at students.  The first prize is a year’s worth of tuition fees, with prizes for runners-up that include a weekend in Paris.

Rachel, who is from Doncaster, heard about the competition and decided to enter.  The company provided her with a template and she used her computer graphics skills to come up with an eye-catching colour scheme for a Twizy.

Competition judges, including TV car expert Quentin Willson, pored over the entries, and Rachel, a first-year advertising and media relations student, was delighted when her design made the final shortlist of ten and it is now on the web at http://www.designatwizy.co.uk/.

Visitors to the site – which includes running totals – vote for their choice via a Facebook Like button and there is a chance to register comments.  Voting closes on 30 March.
