Simba Makwembere

ALONG with his family, Simba Makwembere (pictured) came to the UK to make a fresh start.  And now his career in accountancy is off to a head start.

In his final year of study at the University of Huddersfield, the Zimbabwe-born 23-year-old scooped FOUR special prizes alongside his first class honours degree.

The decision to study at Huddersfield was the best he ever made, said Simba, who now lives at Dalton.  And his roster of awards backs it up.

He won the prize for top student in the audit module of his course... he was granted the Silver Award for the success of his work placement... he earned the KPMG prize for Most Outstanding Student of his Year.... and he was one of a small and select band of students throughout the University whose feat in averaging marks above 80 per cent earned a Chancellor’s Prize.

Now Simba has landed a job with top accountancy firm Ernst and Young, although his studying days are not over yet – he has begun to work towards qualifications awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.

Simba’s work placement, lasting a year, was with Vauxhall Motors in Luton.  He was in the fleet department, evaluating all the deals that the salespeople made, ensuring that they were profitable.

“It was very interesting... and very stressful!” he said.  “Some of the salespeople I was dealing with were 60 years-old and there I was, a 22-year-old, telling them off!”

Simba and his family came to the UK in 2004.  In Zimbabwe, his father Godfrey had been the chief executive of a local authority.  Now, in the UK and based in Huddersfield, he works as a security guard and in social services.

But Simba set out to emulate his father’s earlier career success and decided that accountancy was the best route.  Now he is well underway.
