Huddersfield marketers storm L’Oréal’s Brandstorm final
The University of Huddersfield will dominate the national finals of L’Oréal’s Brandstorm student competition to be held in London.
The UK finalists have been confirmed and Huddersfield took four of the eight places at the London heat.
Brandstorm is an international marketing competition now in its twentieth year, and since 1993, 50,000 students in 280 universities from over 40 countries have taken part. The aim is to challenge students to create an innovative marketing strategy and communication campaign by launching a new line of products within an existing international L’Oréal brand. This year, the world’s largest cosmetics and beauty company have asked the students to look at one of its major brands, The Body Shop.
This is the first year that the University’s Department of Strategy and Marketing have taken part and their marketing students were competing for places with universities such as Bath, Manchester, Nottingham Trent, London, Lancaster and Oxford.
Huddersfield tutors incorporated Brandstorm into the students’ final-year Creative Brand Management module.
“We wanted to give the students the chance to experience brand management first hand with a globally-recognised brand,” said lecturer Carol Cloughton, who has been working with the students on the module with colleague Mohammed Mirza.
“L’Oréal called on the day the finalists were announced to congratulate all the teams from the University on the high standard of work they’d submitted. The fact that we have four through to the final certainly confirms this for us.”
The teams are:
- Team Allegra: Lucy Arden, Adam Drake and Lloyd Birch
- Team Envision: Collette Allen, Rebecca Hall and Jack Taylor
- Team Outside the Box: Kelly Driscoll, Oliver Calvert and Alex Keeble
- Team Dynamique: Charlotte Slack, Rosie Charles and Chris Jogin
The next stage for the students is to go to L’Oréal’s headquarters in London for a full briefing. They will then be given the opportunity to develop their ideas with L’Oréal’s advertising agency in preparation for the national final in London in May. The winners will go on to the international final in Paris in June.
