Students from the Department of Strategy and Marketing at the University of Huddersfield Business School have won this year’s national L’Oréal Brandstorm competition.

The UK final, held in London, saw the team of three, Envision, take this year’s title with their innovative marketing and communication strategy for a new product line created for The Body Shop.

Collette Allen, Rebecca Hall and Jack Taylor presented to a panel of judges, which including L’Oréal’s UK and Ireland’s Managing Director Pierre-Yves Arzel, the General Manager for the Maybelline and Garnier brands, Jeremy Schwartz, and Fabiola Williams, International HR Director.

Envision were commended for their creative translation of the brief for the brand.  “We’re absolutely delighted to have won the national finals, especially considering the quality of the other teams involved,” said team member Jack Taylor.  “It’s been such a great experience.”

The winning trio will now go on to the international final in Paris in June where they will be competing with universities from all over the world.

Universities across the country submitted a pre-case study for evaluation, and team Envision were one of three teams from Huddersfield selected for the UK final, with seven teams overall competing for this prestigious prize.

Huddersfield’s two other entrants, team Outside The Box – Kelly Driscoll, Oliver Calvert and Alex Keeble – was praised for their ‘teaser’ campaign and team Allegra – Lucy Arden, Adam Drake and Lloyd Birch – was applauded for their excellent marketing strategy.

The competition is now part of a final-year branding module delivered by Marketing tutors Carol Cloughton and Mohammed Mirza.  “It’s the first time we’ve entered the competition so this is a fantastic result,” said Mohammed.  “L’Oréal were so positive on the day with their feedback for all our teams, and we’re delighted that Collette, Rebecca and Jack presented the brand strategy they were looking for.”

Brandstorm is an international marketing competition, now in its twentieth year, and is at the centre of L’Oréal’s graduate recruitment programme.  “Since 1993, 50,000 students from 280 universities from over 40 countries have competed in the competition,” explained Carol.  “All the students who presented in the final will be given priority for marketing positions at L’Oréal, as the door is now open for their career development with this international brand leader.”
