Jubilee theme helps talented student impress judges at a top fashion magazine

TALENTED young designer Alison Vincent (pictured) knows that the fashion industry is a competitive business.  But she is well-prepared.  In her first year of study at the University of Huddersfield she has already won a design contest promoted by one of the world’s top fashion magazines.

Alison began her University of Huddersfield degree course in Fashion Design with Textiles in September 2011.  As her first term neared its end she and fellow students were encouraged to enter a contest launched by ELLE magazine, to design a motif to be printed on summer vests produced and marketed by multi-national fashion retailer Reiss.

With the Diamond Jubilee on the horizon, entrants were urged to think terms of British style and they were restricted to the use of three colours.  Alison came up a design (see below) that drew on some quintessentially British imagery – including a crown and the red, white and blue of the Union Jack.

“I just love designing clothes and I enjoy illustration, so this enabled me to combine the two,” said Alison, aged 18, from Northampton.  Now she is looking forward to seeing examples of her design printed on summer vests

She is delighted by the tuition and the facilities in the fashion department, housed in the University of Huddersfield’s Creative Arts Building.  “I am loving the course”, she says, adding that her career goal is probably to work as a designer for an established fashion company.
