Wed, 30 Nov 2011 11:35:00 GMT

Students from Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy joined together to present their research projects at the annual interdisciplinary conference on 1 June 2011 at the University of Huddersfield. This was the final stage of research projects designed and carried out by multi professional groups. The students presented their work to an audience of peers, clinicians from the National Health Service and academic staff.  The presentations were judged and Nichola Green, Luke Siegert, Victoria Harrison, Tegan Greener, Melanie Toulson, Dawn Holden and Lynsey Howarth from the winning team were awarded a cash prize for the best presentation by Dr Janet Hargreaves, Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in The School of Human and Health Sciences.

The conference gives students the opportunity to disseminate findings and demonstrate their application of research skills.  Research presentations included investigations into the use of wii fit balance measurement, student perceptions of peer assessment, the effects of walking aids on forces acting on the foot and the effect of different approaches to post operative rehabilitation for patients with total knee replacements.  Kate Fairchild a final year Podiatry student said this about the conference:-

“Prior to the conference, I was very apprehensive due to my lack of experience in public speaking.  However, I feel that the conference was a fantastic experience and a valuable learning tool.  Listening to the presentations of other undergraduate Allied Health Professionals, enhanced my knowledge on various subject areas.  The friendly, positive atmosphere from my peers, future colleagues, lecturers and external bodies allowed me to develop both my confidence and communication skills.  The conference was a great opportunity for three diverse allied health professions to group together and improve team working and multidisciplinary skills.”
