Huddersfield tour guides needed

If you’ve ever thought about learning how to be a tour guide then Discover Huddersfield would like to invite you to a free Volunteer Induction Day on Saturday 20 July.
The community-led project is looking for volunteers to train as tour guides, man pop-up stalls and support the scheme in other ways. The initiative is the perfect chance for people living locally to learn new skills while at the same time helping to promote the town.
The project began when Discover Huddersfield launched four trails in 2012: the SHuddersfield Ghost Trail, the Historic Buildings Trail, the Public Art Trail and the Real Ale Trail. Available as guided and printed trails, these have proved popular with residents and visitors alike, increasing footfall and dwell time in the town centre and benefiting local businesses.
Supported by funding from Kirklees Council’s High Street Innovation Fund, the plan is now to expand the guided walks, talks and trails to attract a wider audience.
The free Volunteer Induction Day on 20 July will run from 10.00am - 2.00pm at the Lawrence Batley Theatre and lunch will be provided. All are welcome, whether you were born and bred in Huddersfield or are a more recent “incomer”; student age or retired. Volunteers with athletic abilities would be greatly appreciated too as our Pop-Up Stall requires a little bit of exercise!
Volunteers will be introduced to the Discover Huddersfield project and receive training from Chol Theatre on all aspects of tour guiding including presentation and vocal skills, active listening, adapting tours for different audiences and animating talks with conversation and anecdotes.
The day will also include practical en-route training and fun elements such as an interactive game on local buildings of interest.
