Huddersfield students aim for Silverstone podium

IS the next Ferrari mechanic studying in Huddersfield?
Engineering students at the University of Huddersfield are well on they way to designing a racing car of the future.
And, of course, it will have to be tested in racing conditions.
The students have been given expert help from technicians from Huddersfield-based Cummins Turbo Technologies.
They were at the Queensgate campus to examine progress on a race car aiming for pole position at Silverstone later this year.
The University’s Team Hare has been set the challenge of beating tough competition to a podium position.
This year’s national Formula Student competition will test the design and engineering skills of Team Hare to the limit as they develop a formula style race car that will lead the field against many other of the automotive industry’s future stars.
Strong links between the University and Cummins continue to be built and the Formula Student team has received some expert advice from Cummins’ world class engineers as they work to optimise the car’s performance.
Team Hare has previously received praise from Formula Student judges for their engine designs, which last year featured a Cummins compressor stage, as well as the driver environment and control system design.
The new design incorporates many features suggested by Cummins’ expert technical engineers and the team is confident they will impress the judges again, as well as hitting improved performance targets on the track.
Cummins’ president, Jim Lyons, said: “We are proud to support young, local talent through the Formula Student project, which allows them to demonstrate their design, technical and project management skills, which are important to the long term future of our industry.”
Prof Bob Cryan, vice-chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, said: “We are extremely pleased that Cummins continues to take an active role in the Formula Student project.
“The University has an excellent reputation for its automotive engineering courses. Working with the professionals from Cummins gives them an excellent grounding in the skills they will need in their future careers. I’m sure Cummins and the University will be a winning combination!”
Student Jamie Kehoe, of the 2009 Formula Student team, said: “This year we are aiming to compete with top teams in the country and achieve a finish in the event that befits our passion and motivation for engineering.
“We hope that our links with Cummins Turbo Technologies remain strong for years to come and bring about the development of many more high calibre engineering graduates.”
