Bloodhound

‌The Huddersfield Giants and the John Smith’s Stadium will play host to the BLOODHOUND SUPERSONIC CAR (SSC) before their top of the table clash against the Catalan Dragons on Friday 28 June (8.00pm kick off).

The Bloodhound SSC, which is currently under development by some of the world’s leading engineers, is looking to achieve the goal of reaching a land speed record of 1,000 mph (just over 1,600kph) with supporters able to view the car before the game.

Students and staff at the University are welcome to view the Bloodhound on Friday 28 June at the John Smith Stadium prior to the match.  You will be able to view the car from 5.30pm until kick off.  Please email T.Horan@hud.ac.uk by 3.00pm on Thursday 27 June if you would like to come along and see the Bloodhound.

Please note if you would like to see the game you will need to purchase your own tickets.  These are available from the ticket office at the discounted price of £5.00.  Please call the ticket hotline 01484 484123 to book your tickets.

This amazing machine is a jet and rocket powered car designed to travel faster than the speed of sound, covering a mile in 3.6 seconds or four and a half football pitches in one second.  It has a 13 metre long slender body length with two front wheels within the bodywork and two rear wheels mounted externally within wheel fairings. It weighs over 7.5 tonnes and the three engines produce the equivalent to 135,000 horsepower - more than six times the power of all the Formula 1 cars on a starting grid put together!

The unique vehicle is a mix of a race car and aerospace technology, with the front half being a carbon fibre monocoque like an F1 car and the back half being a metallic framework with panels like an aircraft. Speed, however, is not the main focus of the project, rather it is to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by showcasing world class technology and engineering in the most exciting way possible.

With support from Cummins Turbo Technologies, the University of Huddersfield and Aireshelta, the car will be located in the Town Avenue Car Park in its Aireshelta base from 5.00pm through to kick off on the night of the game.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis commented:

“We are delighted to welcome the Bloodhound SSC for our game against Catalan Dragons. It truly is a world class machine with cutting edge technology and it is a great honour to welcome it to the home of the Huddersfield Giants. The visit has been made possible by support from Cummins Turbo Technologies, the University of Huddersfield and Aireshelta and we are very grateful to them for this. I encourage all supporters to make sure they get down to the stadium early to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity to see world class technology and world class rugby league action all on the same evening.”
