Budding writers invited to submit work for publication

Whether you’re a poet, a storyteller or a non-fiction author you could see your work in print.

Grist Books is the name of the University-supported project which since 2009 has specialised in producing anthologies that feature the work of up-and-coming writers alongside well-established literary figures.  The books are then donated free to all the country’s libraries and Higher Education institutions that teach creative writing.

This year, Grist has launched a contest, inviting writers to submit work to be published in a format known as the ‘chapbook’.

Historically, these were small, cheaply produced books full of jokes and riddles sold by hawkers at country fairs hundreds of years ago.

But today’s chapbook is very different.  Still a slim, pocket-sized volume, it is designed and printed to a high standard and an attractive object in its own right.  Grist aims to publish six chapbooks featuring winning entries.

“Each book will have its own professionally-designed jacket with a spine, an individual ISBN and be between 25 and 40 pages in length,” says the author Michael Stewart, Senior lecturer in Creative Writing and the editor of Grist Books.

Authors will receive royalties from sales and winning entries will also be published in e-book format.

Works of poetry, short pieces of fiction, non-fiction or anything creative which exploits the chapbook format are invited by contest organisers.  A team of judges will select the winning entries and there is an entry fee of £10.  Proceeds will be used to help fund publication of the chapbooks.

The deadline for entries is 30 June, 2013.  More details can be found at Grist
