Christine Rhodes (far left) is Joint Head of Undergraduate Nursing and Senior Lecturer Child Nursing and Kath Padgett (second from the left) is Head of the Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing Division.
Two senior members of the nursing team were part of a collaborative project ‘Patient and Carer Voice Network’, which was shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Award in 2011. The project was shortlisted in the ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community’ award category. Times Higher were awarding this to the individual, team or institution who made the most imaginative attempt to aid the wider community socially, culturally or economically. Comedian and host Rob Brydon announced the shortlisted candidates and presented the awards to the winners, at an award ceremony held in London. The project did not win the category, however it was still a great achievement to have been shortlisted.
We are very proud that our staff were part of the project involving patients, carers, students, academics and NHS staff from across Yorkshire, who are working together to improve the quality of education of health and social care students.
Kath Padgett commented: “Members of the network work collaboratively to help with the development and delivery of health care education. The work has a positive impact upon health education courses, healthcare provision and upon those involved. Some of the reported benefits from those involved are that they:
- Have a better understanding of the health system, are able to engage with it better and have the courage to challenge constructively.
- Use the network to develop peer/self support systems and as a consequence report improved health and fewer demands on the NHS.
- Have developed transferable skills which they are using in many different areas.
- Now work widely across the health sector, providing valuable additional support and expertise to the NHS”.
