The Medium Energy Ion Scattering facility (MEIS), a powerful tool for the study of surfaces using proton bombardment, is moving from its old home at Daresbury to a new one at the International INstitute for Accelerator Applications in Huddersfield.
This week, on Tuesday 12th, the large lorry carrying the major components across the Pennines arrived at the Ramsden Workshops - a day ahead of schedule. They were rapidly unshipped by fork-lift truck, and installed in their new home.
Re-assembling the complicated apparatus will take some time. The team responsible, Prof. Jaap van den Berg and Dr Paul Bailey, made careful notes as they disassembled the equipment, but it will take months to put it back together and get it working as it was before, to provide a leading national facility for a wide range of researchers from Huddersfield and elsewhere.
