Students from the Department of Strategy and Marketing at the University of Huddersfield Business School have won this year’s national L’Oréal Brandstorm competition. The UK final, held in London on Wednesday 9th May, saw team Envison take this year’s title with their innovative marketing and communication strategy for a new product line they had created for the Body Shop. Collette Allen, Rebecca Hall and Jack Taylor presented to a panel of judges including Pierre-Yves Arzel, L’Oréal’s UK and Ireland’s Managing Director, Jeremy Schwartz, General Manager for the Maybelline and Garnier brands, and Fabiola Williams, International HR Director. They were commended for their creative translation of the brief for the brand. Jack Taylor said, “We’re absolutely delighted to have won the national finals, especially considering the quality of the other teams involved. It’s been such a great experience.” The team will now go on to the international final in Paris in June where they will be competing with universities from all over the world.

Universities across the country submitted a pre-case study for evaluation, and team Envision were one of three teams from Huddersfield selected for the UK final, with seven teams overall competing for this prestigious prize. Aside from team Envision winning, team Outside the Box (Kelly Driscoll, Oliver Calvert and Alex Keeble) were praised for their ‘teaser’ campaign, and team Allegra (Lucy Arden, Adam Drake and Lloyd Birch) were applauded for their excellent marketing strategy.
The competition is now part of a final year branding module delivered by Carol Cloughton (Senior Lecturer in Marketing) and Mohammed Mirza (Principal Lecturer in Marketing). They attended the event with the students and Mohammed said, “It’s the first time we’ve entered the competition so this is a fantastic result. L’Oréal were so positive on the day with their feedback for all our teams, and we’re delighted that Collette, Rebecca and Jack presented the brand strategy they were looking for.” Dean of the Business School, Professor Chris Cowton commented, “Yet again Huddersfield Marketing students have demonstrated their ability to compete and succeed at the highest level. It shows how our tried-and-tested formula of combining academic rigour and professional relevance pays real dividends in the business world. I’m immensely proud of all the students involved and the tutors who have supported them. Brilliant!”
Brandstorm is an international marketing competition now in its twentieth year. Since 1993, 50,000 students in 280 universities from over 40 countries have competed in Brandstorm. It’s at the very centre of L’Oréal’s graduate recruitment programme. All the students who presented in the final will be given priority for marketing positions at L’Oréal, as the door is now open for their career development with this international brand leader.
