Funkys! Nightclub Launched
Everyone had a great time at the integrated event

On 30th March 2012 the School of Human and Health Sciences launched Funkys!, a nightclub for adults with a learning disability and their carers to come together for an evening of fun and dancing. Held in conjunction with the University of Huddersfield Student Union and Love2meetu, a friendship and dating organisation, the night was a great success and an example of the University’s commitment to community involvement.
The Learning Disability Nursing course at the University advocates integration, and encourages the consideration of health in its widest sense, including social and psychological wellbeing. With this in mind, Funkys! was launched as an opportunity for adults with a learning disability to work alongside students to organise a great night out. The group greatly enjoyed the evening, which included donations for Asda and Sainsbury’s, describing it as ‘fantastic for Huddersfield’ and hitting the dance floor to disco hits such as ‘Mama Mia’.

Students from the Learning Disability Nursing course became involved in the committee and organisation of the event, developing skills in chairing meetings and facilitating service user involvement which are essential roles in contemporary learning disability nursing practice.
Senior lecturer Stacey Atkinson said; ‘The students have worked so hard towards improving community involvement and participation, and the success of the launch is testament to that. We aim to encourage ongoing involvement, with service users joining the committee team to organise future events’.
