Huddersfield Politics Students with Kirklees Youth Councillors

Politics students from the University of Huddersfield together with Kirklees Youth Councillors co-organised the annual Local Democracy Week event in 2010. This event was to promote youth citizenship and involved the count and declaration of the Youth Council elections under the guidance of the Kirklees electoral services team. The event involved young people from schools and communities across Kirklees and included a range of workshops on issues such active citizenship, lowering the voting age and the potential impact of the spending review for young people which politics students designed and ran. A Question Time event was also chaired by politics lecturer Dr Andy Mycock where councillors and youth councillors were put under the spotlight from an audience of young people. Dr Mycock noted, ‘this event proves that once again politics students at Huddersfield are at the forefront in promoting youth citizenship. The University of Huddersfield is proud to contribute to the event’.
