Year 12 students from Barnsley College, Doncaster College and Rotherham College of Arts and Technology took part in University Campus Barnsley’s annual Create a Creature competition in June 2011.

The week-long digital arts competition kicked off when teams start work on their projects using industry standard, state of the art equipment housed within UCB.

After deciding what their ‘creature’ would look like and also deciding what special powers the ‘creature’ would have, the teams worked with UCB lecturers and students to model and add textures of skin, armour or clothing to suit their designs. Next step was to apply a bone structure and use motion capture to make their creature come to life.

In the final, students interacted with their creature using green screen techniques in the state-of-the art TV studio and then combine this footage with the 3D creature and digital backgrounds of their choice to make a short movie. Take a look at all the films that were made.

Judges looked for a combination of creative and original ideas, effective team work and the enthusiasm and dedication that students give to the project.  The winning team from Rotherham College of Arts and Technology were presented with two Apple iPod Touch and a certificate by Head of Campus Pete Birkby.

The competition gives college students the opportunity to learn new skills in 3D, motion capture, digital compositing and green screen techniques, all skills that are used in today’s film industry. It also gives students a chance to have a taste of what it is like to learn in a university environment.
