University Weather Watch – November 2011

Remember, remember the warmth of November!

It was the second warmest November since University of Huddersfield records began in 1990.  According to the Met Office the mean temperature nationwide was 2.9 °C above the 1971–2000 average, resulting in provisionally the second warmest November in over 100 years with only November 1994 being warmer. The number of air frosts was among the lowest for November in the last 50 years.  Despite the rainfall figures being way below average, only seven days of the month escaped rainfall.  Strong wind speeds were experienced towards the end of the month.

Bonfire The monthly mean temperature was 9.68°C (average 7.66 °C) making it the second warmest November since our records began.  The warmest day of the month with an average temperature of 13.8 °C was Thursday 3rd; the highest maximum temperature of 17.4°C was also recorded on this day making it the second highest maximum temperature for November since our records began.  The coldest day of the month was Sunday 6th with an average temperature of 4.8°C, the lowest minimum temperature of -0.3°C was also recorded on this day.  The temperature fell below zero on just one occasion.

On Bonfire Night, the temperature dipped somewhat - the average for November 5th was 7.7 C - and there was some light rain during the day, but the weather was generally fine and clear in the evening.

A total of 41.8mm of rainfall was recorded during the month compared to the average figure for November of 73.8mm making it the fifth driest November since our records began.  The wettest day of the month was Saturday 26th with 8.4mm of rain (20.09% of the month’s total rainfall).  Although it was a fairly dry month just 7 days escaped without rainfall, the driest spell fell between Tuesday 15th and Friday 18th.

The mean wind speed for the month was 9.94km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 34.9km/hr recorded on Saturday 26th.  The highest gust of wind for the whole month was 129.96km/hr recorded on Saturday 26th.

The prevailing wind direction for the month was east.
