Tina Froggett, an Early Years student, has won an adult learners award and is due to receive her award at a celebration event in Huddersfield Town Hall in May.
Sections of her nomination form written by Samantha McMahon, the Course Leader for the Foundation degree in Early Years are reproduced below;
‘Tina began the Foundation degree in Early Years in 2010 after severe health issues. Not only did she manage the side effects of her cancer-related treatment but also had to juggle work and family commitments. During the course she experienced further health issues but she did not give up but continued with her studies. She returned for her third year and has managed to squeeze in surgery whilst completing a major piece of research.
She has a very positive outlook and is committed to her work in early years. The opportunity to study a subject which she is passionate about has, in her own words, ‘given her a real sense of purpose and a new zest for life.’ The course has provided an opportunity for Tina to fulfil a long held dream to get a degree. She is determined to make the most of life and to realise her potential, she has always put her family, friends and her work first. This award is an opportunity to put Tina first for a change!
Her positive outlook can be found in the workplace where her colleagues can see that it is possible to study and juggle family and work commitments. One colleague has followed in Tina’s footsteps and has enrolled on the same course. Crucially her influence has improved practice in the early years setting where she works, as a reflective practitioner she brings everything she has learnt into the setting so that families and children benefit. She has been very supportive to other students and is active and engaged in class, with plenty to say. What more can a tutor ask for!
She deserves a Kirklees award for the most determined learner because she has shown incredible commitment to her studies whilst undergoing extensive treatment and surgery, managing the complex emotional and practical aspects of her own and her family’s life. She has now gained a good Foundation degree. She is an inspiration to all who meet her and is a shining example of an adult learner. ‘
