PhD in Public/Community/Oral History
History at the University of Huddersfield invites applications for a fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship in public or community history. In addition to fees (at Home/EU rate), the studentship will be funded at RCUK rates, £13,726 in 2013-14. The University of Huddersfield also has a generous package of research development funds for research students to enable attendance at conferences and public engagement activities. History has about 20 research students and has an energetic and sociable research culture, in which the successful applicant would be expected to participate.
The studentship will begin on 1 October 2013.
The successful applicant will work with Prof Paul Ward on a project about imagining communities, and particularly how a ‘sense of history’ encourages civic engagement. The project will be informed by co-design and co-production of research with community groups. The intention is to bring to the fore the question of how communities make and engage with their own histories to imagine their futures. Applications are welcome in the fields of community, public or oral history. Preference may be given to those with proposals in digital histories and the use of social media.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute about 4 hours of undergraduate teaching each week in term time across the 3 years of funding. Training will be provided. Teaching will be on twentieth-century British history and applied and community history.
Applicants should normally have at least an upper second class undergraduate degree and have or soon expect to be awarded a Masters degree in a relevant discipline, such as history, public history, community history. Applicants must also have proven experience of working with community groups.
