Post-registration nursing courses nominated for a major award
POST-registration nursing courses at the University of Huddersfield are one of the front-runners for a nationwide award.
The University is one of three shortlisted finalists in the Nurse Education Provider of the Year (post-registration) category at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2012. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 1 May.
In order to enter the awards, an on-line application had to be supported by a number of testimonies, including three from students. Then judges selected the finalists.
Val Ely (pictured) is Head of Continuing Professional Development for Health and Social Care at the University of Huddersfield. Post-registration nursing courses are the largest in this provision which covers some 130 different courses, she said. The University is also the largest provider of post-registration nursing courses in the Yorkshire and Humber region, and enjoys a high reputation among students and employers.
Val explained why she welcomed the opportunity to enter the Student Nursing Times Awards. “Pre-registration nursing had performed very well in the National Student Survey, she explained, and last year this course area had also received an excellent outcome in the University’s subject review. Now the Nursing Times awards scheme was an opportunity for post-registration nursing studies to earn a nationally-recognised accolade too.
“The awards are heavily reliant on student opinion because the judges are looking for levels of support, satisfaction, excellence in teaching and courses that help them meet patients’ and service users’ needs,” added Val.
She will be attending the awards ceremony at London’s Grange Hotel and will be joined by course assistant Ang Hayward and post-registration student Tracy Sharp, who is completing the second year of her MSc Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Community Matron course.
