'Creative Teaching Approaches in the Lifelong Learning Sector' by Josie and Brendan Harvey, published by the Open University Press, is now available! It is designed to appeal to trainee and experienced teachers working in the lifelong learning sector, including further and higher education, work-based learning, and adult and community settings. Josie is the Admissions Tutor and a Subject Group Tutor for the CertEd/PGCE pre-service initial teacher training course for the lifelong learning sector.
The aim is to offer creative teaching approaches to both trainees and experienced tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector (LLS), considering how teaching and learning in the sector must embrace creativity in order to meet the varied needs of its learners. This text also supports staff with the teaching and learning challenges they face in their environment.
This practical book provides a toolkit of creative teaching approaches with the potential to transform teaching practice. Drawing on various techniques and diverse environments, the book illustrates a variety of approaches, offering insights and conclusions drawn from a rich range of practice examples and highlighting the potential pitfalls of creative practices. The book is organised into three main sections: The Individual; The Group Perspective; and The Organisational Context. Within these sections, the book tackles crucial issues such as:
- the characteristics of a creative tutor;
- boosting your creative confidence, and that of your learners;
- creative methods to excite and engage learners;
- constructing a creative session;
- developing resilience and self-care strategies
Throughout the book there are activities, reflection points and extension tasks, as well as the frequent use of symbols and cross-referencing notes to help the reader see links between sections. The topics and examples provided in this book will also stimulate discussion on teacher training courses and staff development events which are focused on enhancing creative practice, classroom management and learner engagement.
