Dr Mahendra Patel has been elected to the English Pharmacy Board of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). Dr Patel, a senior lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at the University of Huddersfield, is a leading figure in the Pharmacy community, who made the transition to academia after a successful career in community pharmacy.
He has been involved in a range of initiatives including work with the British Heart Foundation and setting up the South Asian Heath Foundation’s activities in the north of England. He was one of the first to be made a Fellow of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in 2012 and has since been the only pharmacist to gain that distinction. He was made a Fellow of the RPS in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the profession of pharmacy over the years.
In his election campaign, he emphasised the need for the profession of pharmacy to be recognised at the same level as others in healthcare such as the medical profession, and spoke of the importance of more pharmacists gaining NICE Fellowship. He also championed the importance of research and generating high quality evidence which could be put into practice.
