Leg Awareness Day at Huddersfield

The University’s Podiatry Department held a Leg Awareness Day on 21 November 2012. This new initiative, sponsored by Activa Healthcare, aimed to identify changes in the veins of the legs and feet.
Following an advertising campaign in the local press, 53 people attended the event for assessment of the blood supply in their legs. Some attended for a check-up, others were aware of family changes and wanted re-assurance whilst others were about to take a long-haul flight and wanted health advice.
This collaboration between Podiatrists, Vascular Nurse Specialist Nurses and Tissue Viability colleagues enabled some otherwise undetected changes in their arteries and veins to be detected and appropriate support to be given. A letter of referral to the client’s general practitioner was also generated to ensure aftercare.
This was a real example of the application of inter-professional learning and multi-disciplinary collaboration in action involving the public. Due to the events success, it is hoped that this will become an annual event for the local population.
