The University’s Dr Laura Waters used her expert knowledge of cosmetic testing to help presenter Harry Wallop in this week’s episode of Channel 4’s consumer programme Superscrimpers.
Dr Waters, a Pharmaceutical Scientist in the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences, was asked to help compare four brands of body lotion to see whether more expensive products performed better than cheaper brands.
Having compared the ingredients listed on the packaging, Dr Waters moved on to carry out experimental tests. Firstly she used a tissue paper test to compare how well the different products had been absorbed into the skin. Dr Waters then used an instrument to measure the moisture levels of the skin to compare how well the different products had hydrated the skin, and repeated the measurements two hours later to find out how long lasting the effects were.
Were the cheaper products as good as their more expensive rivals? You can see Dr Waters’ verdict on Channel 4’s YouTube Channel.
