Final Year BSc Food Nutrition and Health student Sara Walls has beaten competition from across the north of England to win the undergraduate category of the Institute of Food Science and Technology's North of England Young Scientist Competition for 2011.

Sara has been investigating how reducing sugars develop in potatoes during storage as part of her final year work at the University, and presented her research to an audience and a panel of judges at the competition which was held at Liverpool John Moores University.  The judges were looking for scientific originality, innovation and whether the research could be applied to industrial needs, as well as how effectively she communicated with the audience.

Huddersfield PhD student Jacob Agbenorhevi was also recognised in the competition, being placed in the top three post-graduate entrants.
