The University is pleased to announce that a memorandum of understanding has been signed with one of the leading higher education institutions in Kurdistan, the Soran University.
After a series of meetings and discussions between delegates from the two universities, a formal reception for the signing ceremony of the memorandum took place at the Rotana Hotel in Erbil, Iraq.
The University was represented by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Andrew Ball (pictured), Professor Graham Leslie and International Development Manager Andrew Mandebura and they were accompanied by Professor Angela Gallop and Chris Greg QPM of forensics and policing services company Axiom International Ltd.
The Huddersfield delegation was welcomed by Soran University President Muslih Mustafa (pictured), Vice-President of Scientific Affairs Dr Howri Mansurbag, Vice-President of Administrative and Financial Affairs Dr Ruzhdy Samad, Faculty Dean Dr Kamal Kolo, Deputy Faculty Dean Dr Nahro and Soran’s Director of Teaching Quality Assurance Herish Khalil.
In his address at the reception, Mr Khalil said that the memorandum was the first step in achieving a long-term relationship between the two universities.
“The first of its goals is to create a multiplicity of social relationships between both the faculty and students of the two universities so that an integration of these relationships can be incorporated into the development of criterion and the identification and establishment of standards for both research and teaching methods of higher education at the international level.”
Mr Khalil went on to stress that the memorandum is also geared towards a “bilateral co-ordination of formal lectures and conferences” which will be underway in the near future.
“The partnership with Soran University will present many opportunities for collaboration,” said the University of Huddersfield’s Dean of International Development, Professor Dave Taylor. “We have a number of Kurdistan students studying at Huddersfield already and this initiative will see this community grow considerably over the coming years.”
The signing reception culminated with Soran University President Dr Mustafa being invited to the UK to participate in an official opening ceremony of the University’s new Enterprise and Innovation Centre.
