Huddersfield Politics Society Making an Impact on Campus
Mon, 04 Mar 2013 16:15:00 GMT
The newly established Politics Society is already making waves on campus, with students on a mission to increase knowledge and participation in local, national and international politics.
With its origins in the Politics department, the Society is open to any student across the University with a keen interest in political topics. Through the organisation of debates and guest lectures, film-screenings, fundraisers and social events, the Society seeks to provide a forum for students from all political backgrounds to share their views whilst meeting with other society members. Their aim is to promote political awareness within the student population whilst encouraging a lively but friendly environment to discuss and exchange ideas and views.
Despite being in its infancy, the Politics Society has already made great strides towards some ambitious projects. The opening event hosted by the society was a well-attended and thought provoking question and answer session with Colne Valley Conservative MP, Jason McCartney; and they have also successfully coordinated events with the Development and Liberal Youth societies, including a ‘Student Question Time’ featuring a panel of students representing a range of political persuasions, headed up by the SU Vice President for Education.
The Society have also forged a close working relationship with Politics staff at the University, with an upcoming debate regarding the UK’s European Union membership being chaired by Dr Andrew Crines. Reader in Politics Dr Andy Mycock commented ‘we are very pleased to support the Politics Society. They reflect the dynamic political environment on campus, and the commitment of Huddersfield students to developing civil society in the region’.
Politics Society chair Andrew Smith said ‘it’s great to see the amount of participation and input from the students and lecturers since the society’s initial start-up a year ago, everyone involved has really put a huge level of effort in and those efforts speak for themselves.’
The Society will be taking its members to Westminster in March for the inaugural trip to the Houses of Parliament. Jason McCartney will be providing the students with a tour of the Houses, and there will be opportunity to engage in a debate between invited MPs regarding lowering the current voting age, chaired by Dr Andy Mycock.
