FOR thousands of students and their families it is one of the proudest weeks of their life.

Graduates

Between Monday and Friday, July 16th-20th, some 4,500 students will take part in the University of Huddersfield’s graduation ceremonies, with several of the events attended by the Chancellor, globally-famed actor Sir Patrick Stewart.

Students who have achieved Bachelor and Masters degrees, plus other qualifications and Doctorates in a huge range of subject areas, will wear academic robes and headgear as they attend the sequence of ceremonies at the Town Hall and the University’s own St Paul’s Hall.

The University’s Chancellor, Sir Patrick, will be presiding over several award ceremonies and also be attending and speaking at functions throughout the week.

One of these functions, the Diamond Jubilee Awards, will see the Chancellor present awards to 60 graduates who have achieved ultra-high average marks of more than 80 per cent for their coursework.

This year will also see the introduction of prizes to celebrate ‘enterprise’ across the University.  The awards – again presented by Sir Patrick – are the brainchild of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan, and are design to recognise the innovation and creativity of enterprising students, enterprise educators and entrepreneurial staff across the institution.

The University will also welcome a roster of eminent people who will receive Honorary Doctorates of the University during the awards week:

  • Author Alan Garner and pharmacist Jonathan Mason receive their awards on Monday 16 July (10.15am) at Huddersfield Town Hall.
  • TV scriptwriter Gwyneth Hughes is also honoured on Monday at the 2.30pm ceremony at the Town Hall.
  • Newly-retired Dean of the University’s School of Human and Health Sciences Sue Bernhauser is made Emerita Dean on Tuesday 17 July (10.15am) at the Town Hall.
  • Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Sir Norman Bettison receives his award on Tuesday 17 July (3.45pm) in the Town Hall.
  • Eminent musician Simon Lindley is honoured on Wednesday 18 July (1pm) at the St Paul’s Hall.
  • The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Rev Stephen Platten, receives his award on Friday 20 July (11.15pm) at the St Paul’s Hall.
