Friendly Persuasion: Hollywood and Propaganda, 1941-1943

flying tigers.jpg.jpg

This paper will look at Hollywood propaganda made in the early WW2 years generally, and specifically at the propaganda aimed at the home audience and the need for social and political inclusion in order to win a total war. It will argue that during the Depression many Americans lost sight of the fundamentals of what American democracy stood for. After Pearl Harbour, one function of Hollywood was to remind the nation of these. Films will include Flying Tigers (1942), Bataan and Air Force (both 1943).
