The first student cohort to join, and complete, the BA Honours Childhood Studies degree at the University of Huddersfield have graduated.  Final degree classifications have been outstanding with more than 70% of our graduates achieving a 2:1 and above.  And we are very proud that there was a First Class Honours gained by Jo Hill with an average mark of 80%.  This level of attainment resulted in a special award of a Chancellor’s prize, presented by Sir Patrick Stewart.

Graduation was a wonderful day for all with a student commenting that “the last three years have really gone quickly!  I am so pleased with my degree”.

Throughout their three years the group have successfully supported each other resulting in brilliant friendships.  One student commented “I will really miss university and everyone on the course”

As ambassadors the students have willingly shared their experiences with prospective students visiting University Open Days.  They have mentored new year groups as part of the course induction programme providing reassurance and encouragement.

The group have responded positively to the study content and demands of the course and their end of year feedback to the academic team has been meaningful and informative.  As the course continues to grow and increase in popularity all feedback will help with further developments.

The academic team are extremely pleased with the success of the group in gaining employment, or securing places for postgraduate study.

Of the 21 students 4 are moving on to postgraduate courses in September to gain Qualified Teacher Status, whilst one has secured a much sought after postgraduate place at Cardiff University to study as a Play Therapist. Eight students have accepted roles working in schools, and others are seeking employment with local authorities, and private organisations providing services for children and families.  For many this will provide further practical experience on their journey towards PGCE study in 2012.

The Childhood Studies team have established positive relationships with this group developed through a learning environment, with mutual respect displayed between students and academics alike.  The academic team hold a strong ethos for ensuring that students leave the course with high personal and professional standards. They are keen that graduates share their knowledge with other professionals and continue their learning in their future roles within the children’s’ workforce.
