Over 30 students will be going down to London to be part of the BBC production team for the event.
This is a great opportunity for them to see behind the scenes of a major TV outside broadcast – and will look great on their CV.
Initially, eight of our students won places to help out after a test and filtering process with students entering from across the UK.
But the BBC approached the University of Huddersfield’s Sports Journalism department to ask if we could supply an extra 20-30 more students. There was demand from other universities but they approached us because of our close relationship with BBC Sport and the high quality of students we have supplied in the past.
A further 23 students were then selected to go down to London. This shows the commitment of our students because they have to incur the travel and accommodation expenses themselves, but many teamed up to share hotel rooms or are sleeping on friends’ sofas.
The students are helping out in the rigging and set up during rehearsals on Sat (8am-8pm) and Sun (8am-5pm) up to the show starting, when they will then make way for the guests in their dinner jackets and dresses.
But as a surprise thank you, the BBC have now told all the students to bring their best suits/dresses for the glittering event as they've have been given tickets for the actual show - and as an extra 'thank you', the BBC are paying for their hotels on the Sunday night.
The relationship with the BBC gets stronger every year, with our students now working at BBC Sport during their studies (some of it paid work, some of it voluntary) and a number going on to work full time after graduating.
