Barnsley College to take over the running of the University of Huddersfield's Barnsley Campus
Barnsley College and the University of Huddersfield have agreed to plan an exciting new development for Higher Education (HE) in Barnsley. From 1 August 2013 Barnsley College would be managing the HE provision in the town, adding those at University Campus Barnsley (UCB) to its already successful group of courses.
The delivery of UCB courses would transfer to Barnsley College, and the College would also take over responsibility for the management of the Campus itself. The University will partner with the College, and will continue to oversee the validation and quality of the provision. For UCB students it would mean business as usual.
The plan has been developed in response to new Government policy, which encourages the growth of affordable Higher Education through the College sector. The partnership strengthens the provision of accessible Higher Education within the town and gives a strong basis on which to continue developing and grow high quality provision into the future.
University of Huddersfield Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan said:
“I believe that the University and the College have found the best possible way to ensure that higher education in Barnsley can take full advantage of the Government’s policy and ensure that it continues to expand. This is something that would not be possible for the University to achieve alone.”
The Principal of Barnsley College, Colin Booth said:
“For students it will be business as usual as there will be no difference in the quality of their experience or the standard of the qualifications they achieve. For the town, we are delighted to be working in partnership with the University of Huddersfield to safeguard Higher Education in Barnsley. We aim to develop and grow affordable HE provision that will meet the needs of our community. It also enables us to provide positive progression and career pathways for our young people from 14 years old upwards.”
Leader of the Council, Steve Houghton said:
“The town and businesses need a workforce with higher level skills to ensure socio-economic growth, productivity and profitability. A number of colleges have already established University Centres in response to Government policy and we are very supportive of this transfer of provision to Barnsley College. We are fortunate to have one of the best colleges in the country on our doorstep as this move guarantees the future of higher education in our borough; and brings about the possibility of our own University at some point in the future.”
