University Celebrates National Carers Week

Mon, 05 Jun 2017 01:50:00 BST

Many students combine their university studies with caring responsibilities. The University defines a carer as someone who looks after another person on an unpaid basis who otherwise could not manage on their own. This might be because they have a long term physical or mental illness, a disability, are getting older or are dependent on drugs or alcohol.

Wellbeing and Disability Services are running the following events in celebration of National Carers Week on 12–18 June 2017

  • Mindful Meditation 2-hour workshop, Monday 12 June, 12.30pm-2.30pm, QSA/09, Queen Street South Annexe

This 2 hour experiential workshop offers an introduction to practice and purpose of mindful meditation with some time for group discussion.

The benefits of mindfulness practice can include:

  • Enhancing general wellbeing and developing self-care strategies
  • Improving and developing healthy responses to stressful situations
  • Becoming more attuned to our body, mind and the world around us
  • Ability to access powerful inner resources to cope more effectively with life’s challenges
  • Learning to take time to pause in everyday life and loosen the power of automatic reactions
  • Developing kindness, patience, openness, focus and concentration
  • Appreciating deeper joy and contentment in the world around us
  • Improving the immune system and building resilience.

This free workshop is open to students and University staff.  No booking is required but it is essential that you arrive in time for a prompt start at 12.30pm.

  • Carers Count drop-in, Tuesday 13 June, 2.30pm-4.30pm, SC4/24, Level 4, Student Central

This is a free drop-in with a specialist benefits adviser and also someone who is able to give general advice for carers, including the possibility of a more in-depth assessment of needs and signposting to further support.  Access to the drop-in is via the iPoint.

  • Wellbeing massage, Friday 16 June, 12.00noon-1.00pm, The Atrium, Schwann Building

This is open to students and University staff.  There is no charge and booking is not required.
