HEAD OF BRASS
The University of Huddersfield is looking for a new Head of Brass to help consolidate and extend brass instrument studies in the Music department. Huddersfield has a long and deep heritage in the brass band movement. Brass students explore a range of styles including classical (solo/orchestral) brass playing, and brass band playing. We are looking for someone who will be able to lead these various activities to build upon them in the future.
The role is equivalent to 50 hours per annum, at the current hourly rate for part-time hourly paid staff, although this may be supplemented by further remuneration depending upon activities undertaken, such as conducting the band, and/or individual instrumental teaching.
The Head of Brass will perform the following roles:
- Liaise with other instrumental tutors in their instrument family group to update and revise current indicative curricula for student performers, and to co-ordinate joint activities within the instrument family, in communication with Head of Performance
- Conduct auditions for university ensembles
- Liaise with the Admissions Tutor and undertake brass auditions by prospective applicants, including supplying appropriate sight-reading tests
- Help to curate the university’s own collection of brass instruments
- Provide specialist advice and support to the Head of Performance and performance team
- Liaise with other tutors to update profiles and ensure full representation on the Music & Music Technology webpages
- To undertake outreach in local schools and music groups and to promote the university for music, and music technology degrees
HEAD OF VOICE
The University of Huddersfield is also looking for a new Head of Voice to help consolidate and extend vocal studies in the music department. Voice students explore a range of genres and styles including classical voice, musical theatre, and pop vox. We are looking for someone who will be able to encourage these various areas of activity, and build upon them.
The role is equivalent to 50 hours per annum, at the current hourly rate for part-time hourly paid staff, although this may be supplemented by further remuneration depending upon activities undertaken, such as individual voice tuition, and/or an ‘opera scenes’ option.
The Head of Voice will perform the following roles:

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a short, informal interview with Head of Department, and Head of Performance. The successful candidate would take up the role and any other agreed teaching duties at the start of the 2017-2018 academic year.
