The annual Harold Wilson Lecture will be held on Tuesday 11 July and will commence at 6.30pm with refreshments served from 6.00pm, in the University’s brand new Oastler Building.
This popular annual lecture will this year be delivered by the Rt Rev and Rt Hon The Lord Williams, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge and former Archbishop of Canterbury. Rowan Williams took up the mastership of Magdalene College in 2013. Born in Swansea, South Wales into a Welsh-speaking family, Dr Williams is a fluent Welsh speaker and was the first Welshman to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury in well over a millennium. A noted poet, he speaks or reads nine other languages in addition to Welsh.
Dr Williams was educated at both Cambridge and Oxford universities, was awarded the Oxford Higher degree of Doctor of Divinity and holds honorary doctorates from well over a dozen other universities. At the age of 36 he became Oxford University's youngest professor, taking up the post of Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity. He has published studies of religious figures including Arius, Teresa of Avila and Sergii Bulgakov, as well as writings on a wide range of theological, historical and political themes. As Archbishop of Canterbury, for 12 years Rowan Williams was leader of the Church of England and symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. He became well known for his interest in social, cultural and interfaith issues and has also written throughout his career on moral, ethical and social topics.
The lecture is free and open to all, but places must be reserved in advance.
