Liverpool, November 2016
Sustainable Architecture MSc students enjoyed a visit to Liverpool on 15 November. They attended the Architex Conference and Exhibition which had a number of speakers and exhibitors linked to the sustainability theme of their course. As part of the visit some of the students were taken on a tour of key streets and buildings in Liverpool led by Professor Adrian Pitts. The photo shows some students in front of statues of the world famous Beatles pop group along the banks of the River Mersey.
Huddersfield - New Oastler Building, December 2016
Students were invited to a sneak preview of the University’s latest building (the Oastler Building) being constructed adjacent to Student Central and occupying a very prominent position on the Huddersfield ring road. The visit on 8 December was facilitated by the main contractor Morgan Sindall who provided a very full experience. As for all site visits students had to wear protective clothing (hard hats, steel protective boots, goggles and high visibility jackets) as well as having a health and safety briefing (as can be seen in the photograph). The building is nearing completion so although most of the structure was hidden some good insights into the fitting out process and its complexities were provided. The tour took over an hour and allowed access to almost all areas.
Leeds, February 2017
Sustainable Architecture MSc students visited the Leeds offices of multi-disciplinary international engineering company Mott-MacDonald. They were treated to a two hour presentation with question and answer session given by Alan Selby one of the Senior Consultants dealing with projects and digital technologies. Alan works within Mott MacDonald Bentley a design and construction specialist subsidiary company. The presentation focused on information management and means to design and construct in more efficient ways using cutting-edge techniques.
