Equality: Everyone’s job, no-one’s responsibility

Both staff and students are encouraged to join the discussion of gender, equality and diversity and how it affects both men and women working in higher education.  

This one day seminar, ‘Equality: Everyone’s job, no-one’s responsibility’, has been organised by the Athena SWAN committee. It will be held on Friday 5 May at 10.00am – 3.30pm, in the Oastler Building.

Athena Swan IN Four extremely well qualified speakers will discuss their ideas and observations on gender, equality and diversity in higher education.

  • Professor Yvonne Galligan (Queen's University Belfast), Title: Fostering an Equality Culture in Higher Education
  • Professor Paul Walton (University of York, Department of Chemistry), Title: Equality for Women in Science: Sometime, Now, or Never?
  • Professor Caroline Gatrell (University of Liverpool, Management School), Title: Light the blue touch paper: Managing your research career
  • Professor Dame Julia King, Baroness Brown of Cambridge (Vice-Chancellor, Aston University 2006-2016, House of Lords), Title: Strategies for Success

The University of Huddersfield was granted an institutional bronze Athena SWAN award in October 2015 and its School of Applied Sciences achieved the University’s first departmental bronze award in April 2016. Other schools will now follow suit by drawing up their own Athena SWAN submissions. Once they are successful, this will pave the way for the University of Huddersfield to apply for a coveted Silver award.
