Imperial inpage Come and party like it’s 1929! Heritage Quay invite you to a unique event celebrating our British Dance Band collection. With live music, historical dance lessons and a cocktail bar (paying) there are no excuses for not dressing up and coming to dance the night away.

Featuring music and dance from the Prohibition Era (1920s to early 30s), you can dress for the period or as you like.

Here's a taste of what's to come:

  • 7.30pm: opening dance workshop by Charlotte Ewart (Dance Through Time) with Shellac DJ Greg Butler (Edison Brothers/Kipper the Cat). Learn to dance the Grizzly Bear, Squirrel, Turkey Trot and The Fox
  • 8.30pm: ragtime and early jazz/blues piano, by Bruce Boardman
  • 9.30pm: two sets from the Palm Court Dance Orchestra
  • 11.00pm-midnight: a selection of recordings from the HQ British Dance Band Collection

Entry is free and you can book online now. The event is open to the public (aged 18yrs+) but tickets are limited, so act now to secure a place.

The 'speakeasy' is part of a two-day conference on 6 and 7 May 2017, bringing together specialists in musicology and cultural history, ethnomusicology, Caribbean and Latin American music, jazz studies, and music analysis, alongside social-dance and dance-recreation specialists, discographers, and performers....all with a view to analysing the ragtime style on its own terms. Expect feature invited talks, round-table discussions, performances and workshops. Book to take part in the conference
