Nina Hossain, ITN newsreader and holder of a University of Huddersfield honorary degree, agreed to be ‘guest editor’ for the day to our third year BA(Hons) Broadcast Journalism students on Friday 31 March. Nina has previously come to the University to give guest lectures, coming last year to inspire second year students, speaking about gender bias and the future of the inductry

She was on campus, working with the students as they carried out a practical session of their ‘Multi-Platform Newsroom’, where they compile and present live radio and TV bulletins as well as web news pages – gathering news from the Huddersfield area. The aim of the weekly sessions is to recreate a professional newsroom environment for the journalists of tomorrow. Nina gave feedback and advice to students on the work they produced throughout the day, drawing on her experience in the industry.

Nina was joined by her colleague Katie Oscroft, one of the on-screen reporting team at ITV Calendar News in Leeds and a regular part-time teacher with the Department of Journalism & Media at Huddersfield.

“The chance to work with industry professionals is a real bonus for our students” – Dr Martin Cooper

“It’s a great opportunity to learn from Nina’s experience” – Josh Riordan, Broadcast Journalism Student

“Working with industry professionals is always an honour. It is an opportunity to not only show off our skills but learn more about the professional environment” – Melissa Fagon, Broadcast Journalism Student
