In April 2017 four lucky students were able to visit Anqing Primary School in Guizhou province in China. This is a school that the University of Huddersfield and its China Office support through the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund. It is a school for children who are either orphans or whose parents have left this remote, rural region to seek work in the big cities.
Rebecca Maulkinson and Chloe Cutting, both from the School of Education, travelled with Beth Phoenix from the School of Music Humanities and Media (photo, right) along with Dilara Changris from the Students’ Union, Dr. Zhen Tong from the School of Computing and Engineering and Prof. David Taylor the Pro Vice-Chancellor for International.
The party were able to spend a full day at the school, working with the children in the classroom and participating in sports, as well as meeting with the Headmaster and local education officials. The University raised some additional funds for the children around our 2017 Spring Festival Celebrations, a collection in the Students’ Union shop throughout February and a staff Diet Club and the party was able to deliver the donation in person.
There was also just enough time to visit the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, before taking in the designer shops of Beijing and returning to the UK on a 3.00am flight.
The visit was funded by Santander Universities as part of their own CSR programme.
