The University provided it’s academic staff with a fantastic opportunity to attend a media training workshop, provided by Media Company Screenhouse entitled Communicating your Expert Work with Impact. These training courses are highly effective and interactive and help academics simplify their research without ‘dumbing it down’, tailor the content to the audience, and deliver it with style and confidence. Screenhouse are the Royal Society’s media training supplier and have delivered their training courses to over 500 academics and professionals at Universities including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial College, Trinity College Dublin, and many others.
21 Academics from all Schools across the University attended the training course, held on site on 16th May 2016. The course opened with a role model presentation from television space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, presenter on the BBC4s Sky at Night programme. Maggie says, ”In this knowledge based economy it is essential that a much higher proportion of women are developed and invested in. We need the brightest and the best so I fully support this training to encourage career progression.” Delegates also benefitted from the voice coaching of actress Victoria Pritchard, who works with companies, public bodies and individuals (to cabinet level in the UK) helping people communicate with confidence. She has also appeared in Emmerdale, Eastenders, Hollyoaks, and Holby City.
