This week-long exhibition is organised by ROTOR for Black History Month and is curated by Olaojo Aiyegbayo, Acting Head of Teaching and Learning Institute (TALI) . ROTOЯ is an on-going programme of art and design exhibitions founded on a partnership between the Huddersfield Art gallery and the School of Art, Design and Architecture.
The exhibition will be on display in the Creative Arts Building from Monday 17 October to Friday 21 October.
On Thursday 20 October there will be a short curatorial presentation by Olaojo Aiyegbayo at the Creative Arts Building between 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
About the exhibition:
Olaojo’s curated exhibition will showcase a number of historical British political newspaper cartoons depicting issues relating to race and ethnicity from the 1950s to early 2000s. The exhibition has both personal and professional resonance for Olaojo, enabling a new generation of students to experience how political satire can stimulate positive intellectual conversations around the importance of making equality, diversity and sanctuary a fundamental part of British culture. Black History Month offers the opportunity to celebrate and remember black history in Britain – a history which has not always been a positive experience for people of ethnic minorities. The curated cartoons are historical images which satirise racism, discrimination and immigration, issues which have contemporary resonance in light of recent events such as Brexit and the tragedies related to mass migration.
The cartoons exhibited are by the following artists: Peter Schrank, Nicholas Garland, Keith Waite, Les Gibbard, John Kent, Arthur Horner, Ronald Carl Giles, Victor Weisz, Michael Cummings and Dave Brown.
