This paper considers the non-pecuniary factors that influence whether an individual chooses whether or not to select into self-employment, using UK panel data. In particular, the ability to work from home and the level of autonomy the worker has in aspects of their job, are examined.  Self-employment includes different types of enterprise and we are interested primarily in sole traders and freelance/sub-contracted workers, for which we have wage information. Preliminary results show that autonomy over job tasks, manner of work and hours of work have a positive influence on the probability of selecting self-employment. However, when wages are included in the model, autonomy over job tasks and hours are significant factors influencing self-employment for sole traders only.
