The School of Education and Professional Development was pleased to welcome Guy Standing, a British professor of Development Studies, to the University on Wednesday 9th November. Flying in from Geneva to deliver this guest lecture entitled ‘The Corruption of Capitalism: Why rentiers thrive and work does not pay’, Professor Standing drew on the research from his most recent book.

The lecture described how rentier capitalism is being strengthened, how more income is going to the plutocracy and plutocratic corporations, and how the precariat is being disadvantaged in favour of rentiers. The final part of the lecture sketched policies for reducing inequality and economic insecurity, and extending arguments contained a previous book, A Precariat Charter. His two latest publications were available to purchase at a reduced price at the event.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Christine Jarvis introduced the lecture and welcomed Professor Standing to the University.  The audience consisted of University of Huddersfield academics and students, other academic colleagues from other institutions and members of the general public.  This was an open event and all were welcome to attend.

Professor James Avis spoke afterwards explaining “In a wonderful, yet erudite and clear lecture, Professor Guy Standing explored key themes from his writing on precariousness and rentier capitalism. Not only did he examine a range of ideas that address the current socio-economic conditions in which we find ourselves, he also pointed towards a politics that anticipates a better society.”
