Egyptian PhD student Sara Elgazzar successfully graduated in 2013. Sara based her thesis on ‘Enhancing the Company’s Financial Performance through Managing the Performance of Supply Chain Operations: A Case Study of an Egyptian Manufacturing Company’ and was supervised by Dr Nicoleta Tipi with co-supervisors Dr Nick Hubbard and David Leach.
Sara reflects on her experiences during her time here and where this has taken her.
“Starting this journey while I was an Assistant Lecturer and mother of a young daughter was not an easy task but it is all about passion! When you believe in what you do, you can go through the PhD journey with enough power to spend every night and weekend for years working on your research”
“After my viva I was made Head of "the Logistics of International Trade Department" at my university in Egypt. It was a great challenge to be responsible for a department and gave the opportunity to apply all the knowledge and skills I learnt during my PhD”
“A year later I became a board member of a company which plays a strategic role in the Egyptian internal trade system. This gave me the opportunity to participate in designing logistics and financial systems and I also participated in developing a New Food Subsidy System allowing people to get high quality goods at good prices”
“All this experience allowed me to participate in a number of consultancy projects and studies for the Arab league and in preparing reports as a consultant at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of commerce.”
“On the research side, I still work with my supervisors and now I supervise my own research students. Studying for a PhD is a turning point in your life; if you decide to start this journey, you need to know it is not an easy journey but it is worth it!"
